Potential airport business gets another shot
NORWICH – Chenango County lawmakers elected to give a prospective business that would generate income at the Lt. Warren Eaton Airport another shot.
Plane Leather Repair Inc. of Bainbridge, a leather upholstery company that specializes in refurbishing airplane interiors, had to back away from plans to rent hangar space because its owners weren’t able to afford a liability insurance policy that was recommended by the county’s insurance consultants, Mang Insurance Agency.
Airport Administrator Donald MacIntosh said the business could afford only $1 million in coverage, not the $5 million liability, or $18,000 per year policy later mandated by the county’s attorney.
But last Thursday, Town of Pharsalia Supervisor Dennis Brown asked members of the Finance Committee to pursue the prospective renter again. He made a motion directing MacIntosh to return to the Airport Steering Committee to ask them to request $1 million in coverage for Plane Leather.
“Get them to make a formal request and request the county’s attorney to review it,” Brown said.
Brown’s motion passed.
MacIntosh told the committee that his associates from Broome and Tompkins county airports offered to make their risk managers available to Chenango County.
“They said these things are always a negotiation between the county’s risk manager and the company. They said they would make their risk managers available to us. They have $1 million coverage, not $5 for their hangar renters,” Macintosh said.
Chenango County has $22 million in liability coverage overall.
“We should strive to look for activity at the airport,” said Supervisor Richard Schlag, D-German.
MacIntosh said there were at least four entities interested in renting space at the airport, including two mechanics, Plane Leather and a paint striping concern.
