Schools of the Past: Columbus – Districts 1 and 2

The why, when, cost, who built it, was lumber donated, all these facts are unknown at this time to both this writer and the Columbus historian. These records have not surfaced and at this time are doubtful if they will! However, as historian’s we never give up hope, perhaps someone will find them stored in a trunk in their attic or barn.
District #1 known as the Five Corners District and a joint district with New Berlin is located actually on New York State Route 8 (correct me if I am wrong) and in 2008 was still standing and has been converted to a private home. As has been written several times in previous articles, the districts at their conception were at times joint possibly because of the location, but most generally as the result of population. The Columbus historian is fortunate to have in her possession several of the schools in the township which will be used on a timely basis with the future articles. She has shared the photo accompanying this article of District #1 when it was still a bastion of education. Also the map with this article will give you the location of #1 as this district is very close to the New Berlin township line with the Unadilla River as a boundary line on the left. You might ask why “Five Corners” – simple, it is the intersection of NY State Routes 80 and 8 and also the intersection of Warner Hill and Red Mill Roads. There is another five corners in the township of Columbus which will be noted in a future article.
District #2 - Barbara and I may refer to it as the “mystery district” as neither one of us has any information relevant to this district. It does not appear on the 1875 map of the township and whether it was an early district and was renumbered, we do not know. If anyone reading this article has any information, please forward to Barbara Avery at her home address in New Berlin. Any and all information that is uncovered regarding any district schools in Chenango County is sincerely appreciated by both the town historian and this writer.
Thus we conclude the first two districts of the township of Columbus and will continue with this township for the next few weeks. Again “school memories” of one-room schools is always welcome any may be forwarded to news@evesun.com. Repeating this information will be used in future articles and if requested will remain confidential.
