Chamber announces award winners for annual luncheon

SHERBURNE – Commerce Chenango has announced the 2010 award recipients who will be honored at the 9th Annual Report to the Membership Luncheon on May 12 at the Fox Run Event Center in Sherburne.
The Volunteer of the Year award is presented to a member who devotes personal time and leadership to advance the mission and strategy of Commerce Chenango through participation in committees, projects and events in the community that benefit others. This year’s recipient, Betsey Baio, NY Pizzeria, has devoted her life to improving the lives of those around her. She has always seen the value of making someone smile, or helping someone in need; stepping up to the plate when necessary, or just being a really great friend.
The Woman-Owned Business of the Year award is presented annually to an active, established business owner with recognizable success and sustainability. Nancy Cushman, owner of Seasons Gift Shop in Norwich, was chosen to receive this award because of her ability to provide a unique shopping experience to residents and visitors, for excellent customer service, and for her commitment to the development of the downtown.
The Agriculture Advocate of the Year is a leader in efforts to increase awareness of the issues faced by the agriculture industry and is focused on improving the future of agriculture in this area. This year we are recognizing Sheila Marshman, Marshman Farms for her long-standing dedication to the development of Chenango County’s agricultural industry. Sheila is a tireless advocate for individuals and entrepreneurs to pursue agricultural careers and projects, and has personally dedicated her time and efforts to a variety of agricultural committee’s and associations.
The Non-Profit Organization of the Year award is presented to an organization that has had a positive impact on the community and the region for the past 12 years. The Northeast Classic Car Museum, a major Chenango County tourism attraction, opened on Memorial Day weekend in 1997 in a renovated 25,000 sq. ft. facility that housed 50 automobiles. Currently, the Museum has 150 automobiles in addition to special exhibits that are housed in 5 buildings and welcomes well over 10,000 visitors annually. The Museum has the world’s largest collection of Franklin Luxury Cars and is home to the Staley Collection.
Registration for the event, sponsored by Platinum sponsors Preferred Mutual Insurance Company and GHS Federal Credit Union, and Gold sponsor, Frontier, will begin at 11:45. Chamber members wishing to attend are asked to call the Chamber at 334-1402 by May 10.
