B-GA wins team titles; Woodfords hitting stride
Track and Field
SIDNEY – B-G/Afton swept the team titles at the Midstate Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships Thursday at Sidney High School.
On the girls’ side, the Bears had 131 points to runner-up Sidney’s 91. For the boys, it was an impressive display of athletic talent and balance throughout the events as the Bears racked up 201 total points, more than 2 1/2 times the score of second-place Greene’s 71.
B-GA’s boys took the top three spots in the 1,600-meter run, the 200-meter dash, and the 3,200-meter run. Corey Burnett won the two longer races, while Mike Loitsch outdueled teammates Josh Norris and Jake Taylor timing 22.6 seconds in the 200.
On the girls’ side, eighth-grader Isamarie Ramos won the steeplechase for the Bears, grabbed the 800 meters, and had two second-place finishes to lead her club.
Oxford’s defending state champion, Katie Woodford, had her best time of the season in the 400-meter dash timing a 57.6. She also won the 100-meter dash, and teamed with her sister Emily, Amanda Marks, and Jessica Russo to win the 400-meter relay. Emily Woodford also set a season-low time in the 200-meter dash winning in 25.7. “We are very pleased with where we are, and as far as goal setting, we’re right on track,” said Oxford coach Irene DeJager. “Katie is way ahead of the pace she had last year at this time.”

STAC Championships
Norwich’s 400-meter relay team of Elisha Eddy, Cleo Daoud, Katie Benenati, and Sarah Bonnell established a new school record, and had the best overall finish for the Tornado at the Southern Tier Athletic Conference Track and Field Championship Thursday afternoon.
The NHS quartet timed 50.7 seconds (50.94 under the fully automatic timing system) to eclipse their own record by one-tenth of a second, and the time guarantees them a spot in the Section IV state qualifier in two weeks.
Bonnell added a fourth in the 100-meter dash (12.6) and also placed in the long jump (16-feet, 8-inches). Daoud was also fourth in the 200 meters (26.6).
On the boys’ side, Mike Reilly set a new personal mark in the 110-meter hurdles timing 15.8 to place fourth, the highest place finish on his squad. Max Morse was fifth in the pole vault with a career-best 12-feet, Kyle Acenowr took fifth in the 200-meter dash clocking a season-low 23.7, Matt Murray was sixth in the 400 meters (52.8), Pat Taylor took sixth in the long jump( 20-1/2) and the 1,600-meter relay team of Acenowr, Murray, Cameron Turner, and Nate Ashton finished in a season-low 3:34.5.

Sidney 12, Norwich 5
NORWICH – Sidney’s Dylan Umbra was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with three RBI, and he pitched four innings for the victory in a non-league victory at Norwich Thursday.
Andy Kozak pitched three innings of scoreless relief, and was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI. “The top of their lineup is just outstanding, and Kozak and Umbra were patient at the plate and took the ball either way,” said Norwich coach John Martinson. “We have been playing good baseball. We made too many errors today and took a step back.”
The Tornado’s Christian Hotaling and Richie Bonney had two hits and one RBI apiece. Josh Borfitz added an RBI triple for Norwich (4-10), who play at Oneonta on Wednesday in the Section IV tournament.

Karl Graham had three RBI for the Vikes, while Chuckie Bishop and Mike Larkin were credited with two ribbies apiece. “They had an extremely difficult time finding the strike zone, and it kind of got out of hand,” said Vikings coach Dave Loomis.

NORWICH – Sidney scored the only run of the game in the top of the tenth inning to defeat Norwich on Thursday in a non-league game.
According to extra-inning procedures, a runner is placed on second base to start the tenth inning. Sidney’s initial runner was cut down at the plate on a throw from Norwich shortstop Skye Ingraham to catcher Ashley Thomas.
On the play, Sidney’s Darrien Schalk reached on the fielder’s choice. Schalk advanced to third after a stolen base and passed ball, and she scored the winning tally on Ashley Gardner’s single.
Dani Gravel struck out 14 for Sidney and gave up two hits for the win. Norwich pitcher Ashley Campbell fanned 11 and also allowed just two hits.
“We had some runners in scoring position several times, and weren’t able to get a runner in,” said Norwich coach Dennis Eaton. “We played great defense again, and Ashley pitched a nice game for us.”

Section IV Class B Tournament
OWEGO – Norwich dropped all four of its matches in the Section IV, Class B tennis tournament, although strong performances out of its younger players encouraged head coach John Stewart.
“We had three seventh-graders competing today, and they were the only seventh-graders in the tournament,” Stewart said. “We were asking a lot of them, and I felt they competed at a high level.”
Seventh-grade doubles players, Colin Stewart and Alexander Stewart, squared off against Susquehanna Valley’s Greg Webb and Cody Roosa. Webb and Roosa were the Sabers’ number one and three singles players this year, and barely held off the Stewarts, 6-4, 6-4. Seventh-grader Matt Craig teamed with older brother Eli Craig in another doubles match falling in straight sets as well.

Seiler among leaders at Section IV medalist tournament
ITHACA – Cory Seiler, a senior at Oxford, shot a four-over-par 76 at the Section IV Medalist Tournament at Cornell University Golf Course Thursday afternoon.
Seiler is in fourth place out of a field of 55 players after first 18 holes, and will compete along with 20 other first-round qualifiers in the final 18 holes on Saturday. “He played superbly today,” said Oxford coach Tim Paden of Seiler.
Seiler, who finished the regular season averaging less than two strokes over par, had two birdies during his round. The top nine scores after the second round qualify for the Section IV state tournament team. The last Chenango County athlete to qualify for the state team was Oxford’s Chad Bradley.
Elsewhere, Norwich junior Jacob Kelly shot an 87 to miss the cut by one shot. Tornado sophomore Eric Walling carded a 95.
