Gallery opens for the summer with memorial exhibit

GILBERTSVILLE – The Hilton Bloom Art Studio is opening its summer season with the exhibit In Memorium. This is a special exhibit of the artwork of the late J. Louise W. Higgins (1917-2008) and stained glass creations by the late Albert J. Caranci (1935-2009). The exhibit will open with a reception on Friday from 5 to 8 pm. The public is warmly invited to attend this party and celebration of the life and work of these artists.
J. Louise W. Higgins created art all of her life, with an emphasis on portraits. Louise completed over 500 portraits in the region, so visitors to the exhibit might recognize some familiar faces. Louise thought faces fascinating, always seeking to capture the essence of a person’s character in her work. The following quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson best summed up her philosophy: “The gods we  worship write their names on our faces.” Louise had shown her award-winning art in numerous galleries throughout the region, including five solo exhibits in the course of her career. This exhibit will feature portraits and landscapes in the media of oil, pencil, charcoal and pastel.
Albert J. Caranci had worked in leaded stained glass for many years, and he spent his retirement years focusing on honing his craft. Albert also enjoyed teaching stained glass technique, and was especially proud of the restoration work he had done on antique windows in the region, including church windows in North Norwich, Rockdale, Schuyler Lake, and Earlville.
The art exhibit will continue to be on view through Saturday, July 17. Selected works will be for sale.
The Hilton Bloom Art Studio, located at 2 Hilton Street in Gilbertsville, will be open Thursday through Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. It is open other times by chance or appointment by calling 783-2779. The studio is handicapped accessible, and there is parking available on Hilton Street.
To get there: take State Highway 51 to Gilbertsville, turn at The Major’s Inn, bear left at the monument to Bloom Street, right on Hilton Street. The studio is in a grey barn on the right.
