Cub Scounts, Police team up to host Bike Rodeo in Greene
GREENE – Bicycle safety will be the primary focus of a free Bike Rodeo sponsored this weekend by the Village of Greene Police Department and Cub Scout Pack 162.
“Bike safety is very important for our youth because it teaches them the importance of safety equipment and to respect the dangers involved in riding their bikes in a municipality where vehicles will be sharing some of the same roadways with them,” said Greene Police Chief Steve Dutcher.
Dutcher and Patrolman Scott Hubbard will be on hand for the event, which will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday in the Great American Parking Lot in Greene. Registration opens at 12:30 p.m.
According to Den Leader Kellie Gyurik, participants must be accompanied by an adult, and should come with their bike and helmet. All children ages 4 to 12 are eligible to attend the bike safety rodeo, which is being offered free of charge.
“It is important that they know the proper way to control their bikes and that they are kept in good working order,” said Dutcher.
The program begins with the “rules of the road” pertaining to bike safety. This will be followed by hands-on demonstrations for the kids on how to properly adjust their helmets, use hand signals, check the air in their tires and make sure their bikes are properly adjusted for height. Finally, participants will have a chance to sharpen their bike handling skills on obstacle courses set up for each age group.
There will also be door prizes and healthy snacks for participants, provided by the Cub Scouts.
The event is the second on which the village police department and the scouting group have collaborated, according to Gyurik. The first was held in September. Rather than waiting a full year to host the event again, she explained, they decided to move the bike rodeo to June so kids could brush up on their bike safety before summer.
Their intention is to continue holding the event on an annual basis.
“We are hoping that every year the turnout gets bigger,” she said.
