Alcohol suspected in fatal crash Sunday
OXFORD – The New York State Police reported that a 39-year-old Oxford man was killed Sunday night in what they suspect was an alcohol-related crash.
Police said they are waiting to contact the family of the victim involved in the single-vehicle crash before releasing his name to the public.
New York State Trooper Thomas Becker reported that police responded at around 10:28 p.m. to state Rt. 220 near the intersection of Sawmill Lane last night and found the driver dead at the scene.
Becker said the man was not wearing his seat belt and was heading east in his 1987 Chevy Suburban when he crossed the opposite lane of traffic, drove off the left side of the roadway and struck a tree.
Police said they are waiting for a toxicology report to determine if alcohol or drugs played a role in the incident. Although unconfirmed, Becker said other factors indicated the incident may be alcohol related.
The Oxford and Guilford Fire Departments responded and were forced to close down Rt. 220 for about three hours while crews extracted the victim and his vehicle. The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office also assisted at the scene.
