Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables seminar Friday

NORWICH – Our Daily Bread Food Closet, in partnership with the Food Bank of Central New York, will hold its second “Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables” informational seminar on Friday.
The 20 to 30 minute demonstration features licensed nutritionist Roseanne Jones, who said the main focus of the program is to “teach low income people about good nutrition and making good choices, which will save them money when they’re shopping for food.”
This will be Jones’ second visit to Norwich, and Our Daily Bread Food Closet Program Coordinator Linda Fowlston reported that the local food pantry, located in the Emmanuel Episcopal Church on West Main Street, is planning to make the seminar a quarterly event.
According to Fowlston, there is a “huge need in our area” for nutrition and health education, and seminars such as this one, provided by the Food Bank of Central New York and Chenango County Public Health, go a long way toward addressing this.
“Because we have so many donated foods, we want to be sure that people know how to best use all that we hand out,” said Fowlston. “We believe it’s important, especially due to the economic situation, for people trying to make ends meet and stretch their food budget.”
Fowlston stated that participation in Our Daily Bread Food Closet doubled last year, and that the local program “struggled to provide for all of those that came through our doors.”
“Other food pantries are experiencing the same thing, we’re all stretched to the limit,” she added.
As to the demonstration itself, Fowlston said that, “Roseanne always brings a variety of recipes that are simple to prepare, low cost and high in nutrition.”
“When people see just how easy it is to make they’re more likely to try it at home,” stated Jones, who added all participants will receive a free “kitchen goody.”
“Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables” will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 37 West Main Street. For more information, or to sign up, contact Linda Fowlston at 847-9934, Melanie McDonald at 336-2334 or visit jsyfruitveggies.org.
