Head-on crash leaves a 24-year-old Norwich woman dead

OXFORD – A head-on collision in the Town of Oxford claimed the life a 24-year-old Norwich woman Wednesday.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office reported that Andrea L. Armitage, of Fair Street, Norwich, was pronounced dead upon arrival at Chenango Memorial Hospital at around 5 p.m. yesterday.

The other driver involved in the crash, Jeanne M. Shear, 57, Benedict Rd., Bainbridge, was taken by ambulance to Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center in Johnson City, “where she is listed with serious but non-life threatening injuries,” reported the Sheriff’s Office Thursday morning.

The accident was reported at 4:43 p.m. along County Rt. 32 (East River Road) about a hundred yards from the intersection of Lyon Brook Road near the Oxford and Norwich town lines.

Police said Armitage was traveling north and crossed the center line, striking Shear’s vehicle in the oncoming lane. The posted speed limit in the area of the accident scene is 55 miles per hour.
