Wanted parolee flees twice from police
NORWICH – The Norwich Police Department is urging Norwich residents to lock their cars, garages, and doors as they search for a wanted parolee who fled from officers twice on Thursday.
Police are looking for Gary L Nichols Jr. , 30, of Norwich, after the New York State Division of Parole reported he violated the terms of his release and issued a warrant for his arrest.
According to their web site, Nichols was convicted of third degree burglary and attempted burglary for crimes committed in Chenango County. He was released from prison on June 26, 2009.
At least some of the charges involved Nichols breaking into a residence.
Nichols is described as a 5 feet, 11 inches tall, white male, about 152 pounds, with brown eyes and very short dark hair that may be shaved bald.
Norwich Police patrols located Nichols twice yesterday and both times he fled on foot into neighborhoods in the first and six wards, near the Eaton Center and P&C Food Market. Police pursued Nichols and conducted searches of the local area interviewing a number of residents.
Police want Norwich residents to lock their doors because they believe Nichols may be attempting to leave the area and because he has a history of theft. After finding a handful of unlocked vehicles with the keys still inside them during their Thursday search, police say they are concerned he may steal a car.
“We don’t believe he is violent, but he may steal a vehicle if given the opportunity,” said Angelino.
