Third time’s the charm for police seeking parolee
NORWICH – The Norwich City Police arrested a wanted parolee Friday after chasing him twice the day before and launching a search through several area neighborhoods.
On Friday at about 10 a.m., police responding to a tip found Gary L. Nichols Jr., 30, of Norwich, hiding out at an Elm Street apartment.
Police began looking for Nichols last week after the New York State Division of Parole reported he violated the terms of his release and issued a warrant for his arrest.
According to their website, Nichols was convicted of third degree burglary and attempted burglary for crimes committed in Chenango County. He was released from prison on June 26, 2009.
Norwich Police Chief Joseph Angelino said police on road patrol spotted Nichols at two different locations Thursday and both times he fled from officers. Nichols allegedly fled on foot into neighborhoods in the first and sixth wards, near the Eaton Center and P&C Food Market, prompting police to conducted a six-hour search in those areas.
Police issued an advisory to Norwich residents Friday, warning them to lock up their vehicles and homes because they believed Nichols was attempting to leave the area.
In addition to facing the violations listed in the parole warrant, Nichols was charged with two counts of resisting arrest and unlawful possession of marijuana. He was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility without bail.
