Police: New Berlin woman came home to a burglar stealing clothes

NEW BERLIN – The Town of New Berlin Police arrested an Albany man Wednesday after apprehending him in the middle of an alleged burglary. They say he was discovered hiding in the female homeowner’s bed.
New Berlin Cpl. Robert Jones said police believe the defendant, 31-year-old Shane S. Tulsi, had no prior relationship with the woman and called the incident a case of a “stranger on stranger” crime.
“The defendant may have been in the area as the woman was leaving her home and saw an opportunity,” he said.
Tulsi was arraigned in Town of New Berlin Court without an attorney and a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf by Justice Joseph Brillinger, who later assigned the Chenango County Public Defender’s Office as his legal counsel.
Assistant Public Defender Kayphet Mavady confirmed Thursday he was recently assigned the case, but declined to make any comments since he had not yet spoken with his client. Mavady said a tentative felony hearing for Tulsi was scheduled in Town of New Berlin Court for Monday.
Jones reported that police responded to the incident after a woman returned home and found a number of her downstairs belongings out of place. After hearing the floor creaking and footsteps above her, the middle-aged woman, who lives alone at the home, called 911.
Jones arrived first on the scene and was backed up by a Chenango County Sheriff’s Deputy.
Police said they found a forced point of entry and went into the home with guns drawn.
“We were downstairs and heard some noise above us, so we headed up,” he said.
Jones said police found Tulsi hiding in the woman’s bed beneath her blankets. The officer said it appeared the defendant had taken his clothes off and began dressing in some men’s clothes from the owner’s closet right before police found him.
Police charged Tulsi with second degree burglary, a C class felony, over the break-in, fourth degree criminal mischief for destroying property to get inside the house and petit larceny for stealing the clothes.
Tulsi was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility in lieu of $10,000 cash bail.
