Former fireman charged with felonies

PLYMOUTH – A former area firefighter resigned Tuesday from his part-time position in Norwich and his volunteer post in Plymouth after police charged him with four felonies on Monday.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 26-year-old LeRoy C. Burlingame III of North Broad Street, Norwich, and charged him with two counts of fourth degree grand larceny and two counts of second degree forgery, class D felonies. He’s accused of stealing money from the Plymouth Volunteer Fire Department while serving as the organization’s president and treasurer.

“The thefts occurred while the defendant was the president and treasurer within the department in 2009,” stated the Sheriff’s Office in a release Wednesday.

Lt. Richard Cobb said investigators believed Burlingame was taking money from the department’s accounts from early 2009 to early 2010. During that time, police claim Burlingame cashed multiple Plymouth Fire Department checks which required at least two authorized signatures.

Police said Burlingame signed his own name and forged the second, stealing in total about $4,200.
