Wanted burglar turns himself in over arson investigation

PLYMOUTH – A man wanted for breaking into a Plymouth home that later burned down in a suspicious fire turn himself in to Sheriff’s investigators Friday.

Police were searching for 30-year-old Joseph E. Horton of North Norwich since late May after the Town of Plymouth Court issued an arrest warrant for his alleged role in a burglary and arson. Horton arrived at the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office in Norwich on Friday and surrendered to police.

Lt. Richard Cobb said police believe Horton was involved in a home invasion that ended with the residence being set afire on May 14 in the Town of Plymouth.

The Plymouth Fire Department responded to the fire at about 9:27 a.m. after a passing motorist saw smoke rising along State Highway 23 and called 911.

Cobb said the fire began in the spilt-level, ranch-style home’s lowest floor at 4091 State Highway 23.
