International blueswoman to bring her unique style to West Park

NORWICH – From soul to rock, blues to funk, and everything in between, international recording artist, guitarist and vocalist Ana Popovic is coming to town, and Chenango Blues Association Board of Directors President Eric Larsen said people should be prepared – this is the real deal.
Larsen stated he and other board members, over the years, had heard nothing but good things about the blues and soul virtuoso and had been trying to work out a way to bring her to Norwich ever since.
“She has quite a diverse show, from R&B to rock,” said Larsen. “She’s just a great guitar player and has a great reputation for putting on a good show.”
In addition, Larsen added what a rare opportunity this is for area music lovers, as the Netherlands-based guitarist’s hectic schedule regularly takes her around the globe.
Thursday’s 7 p.m. free concert will be Popovic’s first visit to Norwich and the first stop of her most recent American tour, he reported.
Since she first picked up the guitar at the age of 15, inspired by her father’s collection of blues and soul records, Popovic has stormed through the ranks of the blues genre’s best and brightest, performing with the likes of B.B. King, Los Lobos, Ronnie Earl, Johnny Lang, Bernard Allison, Larry McCray, Susan Tedeschi and many others over the years.
Not surprisingly, she was the first European-born artist to ever be nominated for a W.C. Handy Award, only presented to the most renowned of blues musicians, and both of her U.S. releases, Still Making History and the recently released Blind For Love, have been nominated for numerous awards.
Popovic, who’s currently promoting “An Evening at Trasimeno Lake,” her newest DVD release, will take the stage from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, in West Park. The remaining Summer Concert Series performances will be held on Aug. 5 and 10, with appearances by The New Riders of the Purple Sage and guitarist Les Dudek, respectively. All Summer Concert Series performances are free for all ages and in the event of inclement weather the Thursday evening performances will be held in the Chenango County Council of the Arts auditorium, 27 West Main St.
