Oxford residents have until Aug. 15 to respond to cable survey
OXFORD – The Village of Oxford has extended the deadline for residents to respond to a survey regarding its cable television provider in the hopes of receiving more responses.
“The survey results will be used to address community needs and interests during the upcoming cable franchise renewal process with Time Warner Cable,” explained Oxford Mayor Terry Stark. The agreement grants the cable provider right-of-way through the village, and is strictly regarding cable television service, not any of the ancillary services TWC provides, like phone or internet access.
The current 10-year franchise agreement between the municipality and the provider expires in March. Negotiations are set to begin in October. While the village is not looking to switch providers, the mayor said he thinks it’s important for the board of trustees to understand the needs and interests of the community going into the process.
“Now’s the time for us to have as much input as we’re ever going to have on (TWC’s) products and services,” he explained. The length of the franchise agreement, public access and educational channels, line extensions and franchise fees are a few of the items they already plan to discuss as part of the negotiation.
Stark said the 29-question survey was hand-delivered to village residents earlier this month. The original deadline was July 30, but as only a little over 10 percent of the municipality’s households have responded so far, the date has been pushed back to Aug. 15.
“It’s important we get a large response,” he said, explaining that with close to 600 cable subscribers in the village, he hopes to receive at least 125 to 150 responses by the new deadline.
According to the mayor, participation is purely voluntary and completely anonymous, although the surveys themselves will be numbered to prevent duplicate responses.
The survey is available at the Village of Oxford office, or online at www.oxfordny.com/government/village.
