Local author returns home for book signing
NORWICH – In What Kind of Apple Are You? author Barbara Mudge takes a creative and forthright approach as she invites the reader to journey with her through a life of trial and tribulation, happiness and joy, and the positive lifelong lessons that can be learned through even the most difficult of ordeals.
The book has been a labor of love for the Florida resident, who grew up on a dairy farm amongst the rolling hills of southeast Norwich, and may never have seen the light of day if not for such adversity.
“I began writing in 1997 while going to college and raising five children,” recalled Mudge, who actually finished the book in 2001. “I was so involved with work, there was no time to publish it.”
A self-styled perfectionist, Mudge said she “always wanted to excel” no matter what task she might be performing for the New Smyrna Beach Utilities Commission, where she was employed for over 20 years.
However, following her resignation as director of human resources for the Cookman University Benefits Administration, Mudge knew it was time to wrap up the book and move on.
“It was a new adventure in life,” the author said, who has begun work on a second book, untitled as of yet. “Life has passages, and this was just another passage in life.”
Throughout the book, Mudge relates true tales of romping through the fields and forests of Norwich with a small group of friends, battling – and ultimately overcoming – epilepsy, which she suffered from up to the age of 29, her experiences as a mother, wife, daughter and friend and how she’s “learned through obstacles and tribulations that all things do work for good” when one has faith in God, and faith in oneself.
“I would just like readers to be inspired and encouraged by the words given to me,” she added.
Those interested in meeting the author and picking up a signed copy of What Kind of Apple Are You? will have the opportunity to do so from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, at the First Edition Book Store, 13 S. “I’m really excited about this one. Barbara’s a go-getter,” said First Edition owner Lisa Mody, who added she’s always tried to support local authors in any way she can. “We’ve already sold quite a few copies. People want to get one so she can sign it for them on Saturday.”
