Local trumpeter to be recognized following Rome performance
ROME – Born and raised in Norwich, Santa Clara Vanguard trumpeter Jonathan Calhoun, who will perform with the group Thursday at the Drums Along the Mohawk (DATM) event in Rome, has a unique history when it comes to Drum Corps International (DCI). Not only was his grandfather a co-founder of the Watkins Glen-based Squires Drum and Bugle Corps, his parents actually met while marching with the very same troupe.
The focus at Thursday’s performance, however, will be Jonathan himself, who, earlier this week, turned 22 years old and has now “aged-out” of the Vanguard ensemble, marking this as his final performance with the group.
In addition, DATM Publicity Coordinator Roseann Grotevant reported that Calhoun, who’s performed with the Vanguard for the past two seasons, will be presented with one of six Music For Kids 2010 Tour Awards, a $500 scholarship the fourth-generation corpsman earned by penning an essay on the importance of the drum corps in his life and in his family’s history.
“For me the drum corps field has always been a home away from home,” said the Binghamton University history major. “It’s something that has always been a part of me and something I’ve always loved. It’s part of my life.”
As far as the future is concerned, Calhoun stated he planned to continue his studies at BU and possibly attend grad school, though he added he’d like to continue to gain experience within the drum corps organization and perhaps find a role as a teacher at some point.
“I’m just very, very proud of his accomplishments and this was a major thing for him,” said Calhoun’s father, Norwich High School Marching Band Assistant Director Chris Calhoun, who added his son successfully competed with approximately 200 other musicians for one of only 75 spots on the Vanguard roster. “We’re very proud of what he’s done and he worked very hard to be selected to one of the premier organizations in the country.”
The elder Calhoun, who will be taking the entire Norwich Marching Band to Rome on Thursday for a Santa Clara Vanguard rehearsal, and to attend the competition, also said he believed his son “understands he’s going to have to learn the ropes,” and “it seems like he’s willing to do that and that’s exciting.”
“It’s a real honor for Jonathan to be a part of this group and he’s really achieved something special,” he added. It’s going to be a very special day for him.”
Drums Along the Mohawk will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, at the Rome Free Academy Stadium. Tickets for the event will be available from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. tonight at the stadium, via the show’s website, www.drumsalongthemohawk.com, through the Rome Chamber of Commerce ticket outlet located at 139 West Dominick St., Rome, and at the New Hartford Big Apple Music store.
