Flowers wanted for fair’s horticultural display
NORWICH – Extremely warm weather conditions brought many gardeners’ prized flowers to bloom early this year, too early, in fact, to exhibit in the Chenango County Fair’s Horticultural Show, this year titled “Color Your World 2010.”
Because the exhibit is so popular, the garden clubs hosting it are asking anyone, adults and children alike, to enter what annuals, perennials, bulbs and tubers, and roses that they still have blooming.
“We often hear people say that they have flowers at home that rival those taking awards at the fair. We want you to look at your flowers and enter them,” said Marilyn Kochersperger, chairperson of the Norwich Garden Club’s exhibit.
Gardeners may bring their prized posies to the Exhibition Hall at the Chenango County Fairgrounds in Norwich from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8 or from 7 to 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 9. Judging begins Monday at noon.
The Norwich Garden Club, the Oxford Garden Club, and Town and Country Garden Club, co-hosts of “Color Your World,” will be creating special gardens based on a style or theme which exemplifies horticultural diversity in outdoor living spaces. The 20’ wide by 10’ deep and 8’ high spaces will be filled with various structures, furniture, sculpture, rocks and, of course, flowers. The Master Gardeners of Chenango County will fill an educational exhibit space.
“The heat has changed the dynamics of everything. We’re all searching our gardens to see what to enter,” said Kochersperger.
