Les Dudek set to perform at Chenango County Fair tonight
NORWICH – Following an extremely successful string of Summer Concert Series performances, Chenango County Blues Association President Eric Larsen and his fellow board members have one more surprise up their sleeves – a special free concert by rock guitar legend Les Dudek.
Dudek, who’s enjoyed a stellar solo career over the years, can be found performing on numerous recordings from a diverse group of musicians including Stevie Nicks, Cher, Dave Mason – of Traffic fame – Boz Scaggs and The Allman Brothers Band, with whom he accompanied guitarist Dickey Betts on classics such as “Ramblin’ Man” and “Jessica.”
Dudek will perform at 8 tonight in the Chenango County Fairgrounds Entertainment Tent.
“Obviously it was a real learning experience and you learn a little bit from everybody,” said Dudek, who added a new album is currently in the works. “Now it’s time to march on and continue to do my own thing.”
“He just kind of came on to our radar quickly and we had the opportunity to bring him in,” said Larsen. “As soon as we heard he was available we jumped on it.”
Larsen said a quick perusal of Dudek’s biography shows just how accomplished the musician’s musician truly is, and added he was impressed by “the sheer number of people he’s worked with, a lot of different bands” representing “a lot of different styles.”
“He’s not just a hired gun, he helped write that stuff,” added Larsen.
Like many other musicians growing up in the 1960’s, Dudek was originally inspired by artists such as Elvis Presley, Ricky Nelson and the Beach Boys, yet it was the music of The Beatles, and the subsequent British Invasion, which led to a 14-year-old Dudek picking up the guitar.
“This will be our first gig on this east coast run so we’re excited,” said Dudek, who added he and the band will be performing a number of songs drawn from the seven albums he’s released to date, in addition to some covers from other groups he’s recorded with. “We’ve been marching along, having a lot of fun, and we’re looking forward to playing in Norwich.”
“All of the local guitar players I’ve talked to are coming to the show,” said Larsen. “He’s got that kind of reputation.”
Due to a number of factors, including Mother Nature, Larsen reported the Summer Concert Series in 2010 was an unprecedented success, bringing hundreds of music lovers to West Park in the weeks leading up to the 18th Annual Chenango Blues Festival.
“We were very fortunate to have some great weather and I think we had a record number of people come out this year,” stated Larsen, who wished to thank the many donors who make the event possible. “Hopefully that’s do in part to the quality of entertainment we’ve been able to bring in.”
