MIAMI, Fla. – Former Chenango County Sheriff Thomas Loughren has been let go from his position as police chief for the Miccosukee Indian tribe in Florida, The Miami Herald reports.

The Miccosukee Indian tribe on Monday fired Loughren after 15 months on the job. The police department and Loughren declined to say why.

“I can confirm I am no longer the Miccosukee police chief as of today,” he told The Miami Herald Monday.

Loughren, 58, an Oxford native, was sworn in as Miccosukee chief in May 2009, shortly before he had officially announced his resignation as Chenango County Sheriff, a post he had held for 18 years. Loughren’s abrupt decision surprised many lawmakers at the time.
