MIAMI, Fla. – Former Chenango County Sheriff Thomas Loughren has been let go from his position as police chief for the Miccosukee Indian tribe in Florida, The Miami Herald reports.
The Miccosukee Indian tribe on Monday fired Loughren after 15 months on the job. The police department and Loughren declined to say why.
“I can confirm I am no longer the Miccosukee police chief as of today,” he told The Miami Herald Monday.
Loughren, 58, an Oxford native, was sworn in as Miccosukee chief in May 2009, shortly before he had officially announced his resignation as Chenango County Sheriff, a post he had held for 18 years. Loughren’s abrupt decision surprised many lawmakers at the time.
“We’ve had many very high-profile murder cases here and I take great pride in the convictions. I leave a staff much better than I ever was at the beginning when I used to micromanage everything. The folks are good here. The politicians have supported me, and I will miss, without a doubt, my staff,” he said at a May 26, 2009 press conference announcing his resignation.
Loughren made headlines two weeks prior when it was discovered he had been sworn in as police chief for the Miccosukee while on vacation from his position in Chenango County. While some county officials were privy to the Sheriff’s intentions, several expressed surprise at his rapid decision to accept a new job.
Loughren said he had intended to officially notify the public upon his return from a month-long Florida vacation. He told reporters that he was not “the retiring type” and was solicited for the new position.
Loughren had worked for the Miccosukee Tribal Police for six years in the 1980s as a federal and state certified police officer. The American Indian tribe operates the Miccosukee Resort & Casino in Miami. The reservation includes a portion of Everglades in Broward County along Alligator Alley, as well as land in Dade County near Miami.
