NORWICH – The Chenango County grand jury met Wednesday and handed up several felony indictments against ten defendants.

At the proceedings, the District Attorney’s Office presents evidence against those they wish to prosecute as a felon and the jury decides if there is enough reasonable cause to charge a person. A grand jury indictment is not a conviction of guilt, and defendants will have the right to challenge the allegations against them in Chenango County Court.

• Parolees Robert E. Straight, 32, of Plymouth and Douglas J. Wilkinson, 30, of Norwich, were both indicted for third degree burglary, third degree criminal possession of stolen property and third degree grand larceny, all D class felonies.

The indictment claims the two men broke into the Country Store gas station at around 4 a.m. Aug. 15 and stole more than $5,500 in merchandise and cash.

Police said Straight was released from state prison Aug. 10 for a previous burglary conviction. He was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility without bail and Wilkinson in lieu of $50,000 cash bail.

• Christopher R. Wright, 27, Norwich, was indicted for third degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a B class felony, third degree burglary, a D class felony and fourth degree criminal mischief, a misdemeanor, after breaking into a double-locked drug storage container in a restricted area of the Chenango Memorial Hospital June 26.

Norwich police said White removed a number of prescription pain narcotics used prior to surgeries and then left the hospital. Police later developed a description and arrested Wright.
