DVD Patrol

Don’t wipe out, Patrollers! The DVD Patrol is having one of those weeks we like to call our first Channel Surfing Special. It just means that you know when you’re home on the weekends and you just see what is on TV and a whole lot of good movies are on. The Toddster just had one of those and this is a good chance to launch a few TV specials that will get us ready for the new Fall TV season. All of our picks are now available on DVD and let’s see what’s swimming out there.

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back - During the 30th Anniversary celebration, be careful because someone out there just might be looking for you. In Luke Skywalker’s (Mark Hamill) case, this is very true. After destroying the Empire’s orbital Death Star satellite, Luke and the Rebel Forces are on the run from Darth Vader and the Empire. Han Solo (Harrison Ford) is also on the run from Jabba the Hutt and his bounty hunters too. Vader gets a line on the group and corners them on the icy planet of Hoth and after nearly defeating them, Han and Luke get separated. Luke is urged by an old friend to seek out Yoda so he can teach him the ways of the Force to become a Jedi Knight. Learning this, Vader goes after Han, Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), and the rest of the crew to force Luke to come to him. After some time has passed, Vader captures Han and the others and Luke receives a message through the Force that his friends are in danger. Has Luke learned enough to take Vader on?

Paycheck - What some people will do to earn their money. Michael Jennings (Ben Affleck) was always the perfect guy to get the job done. If there was a way to make a product better or out do something, he would do it. After the job was done, his memory was always wiped so he wouldn’t remember anything. An old friend (Aaron Eckhart) has the job of a lifetime but it would take 3 years of his life and he would earn the ultimate paycheck when it was over. When it’s done, he’s ready to take it easy but now the FBI is after him to find out just what he’s been doing for the last three years. Now the only thing that will save him is a package with an assortment of things and a beautiful mystery woman (Uma Thuman) that hold the answers to what’s going on. Can Michael piece it together?

The Man from Snowy River - There are just times you really want to see somebody succeed. Jim Craig (Tom Burlinson) was getting ready to get out in the World but he feels he’s not ready to do that quite yet. A choice is sometimes made for you and during an accident, his Father is killed. Now he has to make a go of it and gets a job working for a cattle baron (Kirk Douglas). Jim starts learning the ropes and meets the Baron’s daughter Jessica (Sigrid Thornton). He doesn’t feel that Jim is good enough for her. Jim gets sent to find some stray cattle in the mountains and learns later that Jessica has run away to find Jim. Jim finds her and takes her back thinking that this is the best for the both of them. Some time later, one of the Baron’s men with a score to settle releases one of the bosses’ prized horses and blames Jim. Can Jim find it and prove that he has what it takes to win his lady love?

National Lampoon’s Van Wilder - Having too much of a good thing isn’t always so bad. In Van Wilder’s (Ryan Reynolds) case, that’s definitely true. Usually people go to school anywhere from 2 to 4 years. Van has been going for 7 years. Finding out that Van may have been wasting his money, Van’s father (Tim Matheson) confronts him and cuts off his allowance. Van has to find a way to fund his tuition and becomes the subject of the latest college newspaper expose being written by up and coming college reporter Gwen (Tara Reid). Gwen’s boyfriend Richard (Daniel Cosgrove) isn’t happy about her latest story either. Van thinks Gwen is great. Will Van find a way to charm her away from Richard?

Ghost Rider - It’s always recommended that you read something before you sign it. Johnny Blaze (Nicholas Cage) might have forgotten to do that. When he was younger, he met a mysterious stranger (Peter Fonda) who told him he had the power to cure his Father’s illness which he did but later lost him to a tragic accident. Johnny gave him his soul and now the stranger has returned again to tell Johnny that he needs him to find his son Blackheart (Wes Bentley). Johnny has no choice when he’s been given the power to change into the Ghost Rider with some amazing abilities.Complicating things even more is the return of Johnny’s former girlfriend Roxanne (Eva Mendes). Is Johnny going to complete his mission before Blackheart and his men come after him?

A brand new Toddster team up is coming your way next week and the crew and I have something in mind with a little TV theme in mind. You’ll have to come back to see what that is. Have a great one and the Toddster will return.
