Perkins dancers earn honors at national competition
NORWICH – Dancers representing the Amber Perkins School of the Arts of Norwich and Vestal won grand prize championship awards at two national competitions held in Orlando, Fla. last month.
A group of seven dancers competed in the Can Dance and American Dance Awards annual events over a two and a half week period in mid July, performing solos for title, duos and small group modern routines.
Robin Wonka of Oxford placed second in her solo and took first place and the overall Can Dance competition cash prize for “Parce Mihi Domine,” a duo choreographed by Amber Perkins and performed with partner, Blake Zelisknar of Johnson City.
Studio owner and principal teacher/choreographer Amber Perkins won Can Dance’s Choreographer of the Year award for 2010.
At the American Dance Awards competition, the small group extended modern piece titled “Green” won first place in its category and took home the overall prize. Also, the small group piece “Ignatius” took second place and the duo “Parce Mihi Domine,” won first place.
John Michael O’Neill of Chenango Forks took second runner up for ADA title. He was the Can Dance Male Dancer of the Year last year.
“In less than seven days, we won two different national titles with two different dances,” said Perkins. “There’s no question our little studio in Norwich is considered big time in the dance world.”
Dancers competing were: Wonka, Zelisknar, O’Neill, Tara Franklin of South New Berlin, Ariana Tagliaferri of Binghamton, Marika Matuszak of Johnson City, and Thomas Sutter of Vestal.
The studio is currently taking student registrations and opens for class on Sept. 9.
