Norwich golfers qualify for team sectionals

BINGHAMTON – Norwich nearly knocked off defending STAC champion Seton Catholic Central in the Tornado’s second golf match of the season. The Saints’ top player, Josh Jimenez, shot a one-under-par 33 as the Saints edged the Tornado, 188-192, Thursda at Ely Park Golf Club.

“It was a very good performance at their place, and we almost got them,” said Norwich coach Bob Branham.

In the loss, Norwich did qualify for the Section IV Team Tournament in the spring. A team needs to shoot an aggregate 30-over-par or less, and Norwich beat that mark by eight shots in its first attempt. “It’s always good to get (qualifying for the team sectionals) out of the way, and I anticipated that we would today,” Branham said.

Jacob Kelly and Frankie Somich shot 36 and 37 to pace the Tornado. Corey Johnson shot his varsity low score, a 39, while Eric Walling and Casey Marson had 40s.

Branham said that Marson is the first female Norwich player in his tenure to post a match qualifying score. “She was very excited,” Branham said of Marson.
