Norwich tennis, volleyball teams open season with wins

Norwich 7, Chenango Valley 0
NORWICH – It was a sweeping start to the season for the Norwich tennis team, who did not give up a point in blanking Chenango Valley Monday in a non-division matchup.
“I expected to win, but I didn’t expect a rout,” said Norwich coach John Stewart. “We had two three-setters, but everything else was pretty decisive.”
Norwich was thoroughly impressive in winning all four singles matches in straight sets. Bryn Loomis, Sophie Stewart, Jessica Lerner, and Reva Seager allowed just six total games to their CV opposition, and Seager won her match, 6-0, 6-0.
Katie Orioli and Emily Stewart, returning this year at first doubles, outlasted their opponents, Lexi Lamb and Megan Santacrose taking the third set, 7-5. Kristi Orioli and Alyssa Stagliano rallied from 4-1 down in the third set to win at second doubles, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6. Gina Mecceriello and Shaniqua Yaccarino won in straight sets at third doubles.
“We have some new combinations at doubles and people are getting used to playing with each other,” Stewart said. “We still have some kinks to work out in doubles, but our lineup will be solid from top to bottom.”
Norwich hosts Owego on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Volleyball

Norwich 3, Sidney 2
NORWICH – Norwich coach Shelly Alger attributed Norwich’s opening-game win over Sidney Monday to the offseason workouts her team conducted over the summer.
“We were sharper, and you could see the difference tonight,” Alger said.
Megan Moses confounded Sidney with 12 aces on the day, and Norwich had multiple contributors to outlast the Warriors. Jasmine Whitfield had five aces and s team-high seven assists, and Leah French was big at the net finishing with four kills, four stuff blocks to go with three aces.
Norwich won the opening two games, gave back the next two, but finished off the win, 25-21, 25-21, 15-25, 23-25, 25-18. Norwich also took the junior varsity matchup in three games.

ELMIRA – Elmira Free Academy scored eight goals in the first half getting two apiece from Nick Lian and Tom Milliken to blank the Tornado Monday in Norwich’s opening game of the season.
