Sherburne businesses help to make Chenango United Way POP campaign a success

SHERBURNE – Approximately 20 Chenango County businesses participated in this year’s Chenango United Way Point of Purchase (POP) Window Coupon Campaign and while contributions have yet to be collected from some areas, Campaign Director Rebecca O’Connor reported the Sherburne community led the fundraising effort with approximately $700 in donations.

To take part in the POP campaign, local businesses sought a $1 donation from customers in exchange for a coupon, to be filled out with the customer’s name and displayed on windows, walls and countertops around the business.

“Sherburne really shined, in my eyes,” said O’Connor. “Everyone that took part was just fantastic and it’s a great example of local businesses in small communities making a difference.”

Gilligan’s Island owners Mike and Andy Lagoe said their restaurant and ice cream shop had collected $300 toward the POP campaign, and last Friday were awarded the Chenango United Way’s Top Hometown Business for their efforts.

“We’ve never done one of these before,” stated the Lagoe brothers, who’ve owned and operated Gilligan’s Island for the past four years. “We were pleasantly surprised by the outpouring by our community, especially in these tough economic times.”
