Mt. Upton home destroyed in fire
MT. UPTON – A fire destroyed the home of a Mt. Upton couple Tuesday.
The home of Ed and Erna Powers caught fire at around 11:42 a.m. yesterday at 756 Lockewood Hill Road. The Powers were not home at the time.
“By the time the first crews arrived, the home was fully involved,” said Mt. Upton Borden Hose Company Fire Chief Truman Backus. The Unadilla, Guilford, Bainbridge and Sidney Fire Departments also responded to the fire.
Daughter Patricia Mowers said her parents lived at the residence for the past 17 years and operated the nearby Rockdale Hotel.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but Backus said foul play is not suspected.
Firemen also said they had contacted the American Red Cross to offer the family support.
