27th Annual Wrench Wranch Bluegrass Roundup set to kick off
COVENTRYVILLE – The 27th Annual Wrench Wranch Bluegrass Roundup will kick off at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Wrench Wranch, Route 206, Coventryville, with a traditional pot luck supper and a variety of open stage performances.
The yearly event, which typically draws approximately 1,000 bluegrass fans from across the northeast throughout the weekend, has become a ritual celebration of all things bluegrass, according to festival organizer Ted Wrench.
Friday’s festivities will include an auction, tentatively scheduled for 1 p.m., a spaghetti dinner at 5 p.m. and musical performances by “Doc” Weismore and the Ridge Road Ramblers and the Cannonball Express Reunion, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Wrench said while Friday night’s performances lean more toward the country side, with round and square dancing throughout the evening, there will be plenty of bluegrass for festival-goers on Saturday and Sunday.
From 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday, those in attendance will have the opportunity to experience some of the area’s best in local and regional bluegrass, with appearances by Cedar Ridge, Cannonball Bluegrass, C&T Bluegrass, the Lonesome Road Ramblers, Shawn Batho & Corey Zink and the Wrench Ramblers.
Headlining Saturday evening will be the Pennsylvania-based Remington Ryde, who, in May of 2010, released “Grandpa Was My Guide,” the group’s third full-length album.
In addition – and new to the Wrench Wranch this year – a Doodlebug Tractor Parade, featuring a selection of 1920s and 1930s converted Ford Model-T and Model-A tractors.
Wrench said he expected many members of the “older crowd” will remember when Doodlebug Tractors were in use, specifically during the WW II era when production tractors were hard to find. Doodlebug rides will be available throughout the weekend, Wrench added.
Sunday will feature a pair of gospel performances from 10 a.m. to noon by On Our Way Home and Gospel Way, in addition to a special performance by local phenom and Nashville recording artist Kaitlyn Jackson.
From noon on it will be all things bluegrass once again with additional performances by Shawn Batho & Corey Zink, the Lonesome Road Ramblers, C&T Bluegrass, Cannonball Bluegrass, Cedar Ridge and more, said Wrench, who added a Chicken Barbecue dinner will be served beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
“It’s been growing for years now and I enjoy all of the people,” stated Wrench. “I say every year that I can’t do it, yet somehow I end up doing it every year, it’s a good bunch of people and it should be a good time.”
Food and beverages will be served up by the Kithcarts and camping is available, along with on-site bathrooms and showers.
“Ted and Brenda do a great job getting it organized and the crowds are very enthusiastic,” said “Doc” Weismore, vocalist for the Ridge Road Ramblers. “People who like country and bluegrass music should really think about attending.”
Tickets for the Wrench Wranch Bluegrass Roundup are $25 for the weekend, $5 for Friday night, $15 on Saturday and $10 for Sunday. Children under 12 are admitted for free if supervised by an adult. For more information contact Ted or Brenda Wrench at 639-1141.
