Roots & Wings extends hours to meet needs of working families
NORWICH – More working families are in need of the emergency and basic needs services provided by Roots and Wings, according to those connected with the division of Catholic Charities of Chenango County.
“We have a lot of working families now,” reported Volunteer Coordinator Kathy Darrah.
To better serve this segment of the population, the local non-profit organization recently adjusted its hours of operation at its Barry Street location. The facility serves as both a food pantry and a clothing bank. Household goods, furniture and a host of other services are also available.
New pantry hours are 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Monday and Thursday; and 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
Expanded store hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday and Thursday; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. The entire facility is closed from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. daily for lunch.
The hope, Darrah explained, is that working families will find the facility more accessible with the extended hours on Monday and Thursday.
From 2008 to 2009, the number of households which utilized the services provided by the agency increased exponentially. In 2008, they served 9,353 households. Last year, they provided services to 11,191, according to numbers provided by Director Melinda Mandeville.
According to Darrah, the number of households Roots and Wings is currently serving is consistent with last year. Between 450 and 500 families make use of the food pantry on a monthly basis, she said. And they are not all the same faces.
“We have a steady stream of new clients every month,” she reported.
At times, the agency sometimes struggles to keep up with demand.
“We always need food,” Darrah said, explaining that donations of staples such as cereal, peanut butter, fruits and vegetables are always helpful.
