Norwich tennis team falls to Sus Valley

NORWICH – Norwich dropped an excruciatingly close final to Susquehanna Valley as the Sabers clinched the STAC Central Division crown Wednesday with their second win over Norwich (7-3) this season.
“It was as close as it gets,” said Norwich coach John Stewart. “Everyone played well and they all competed the best that they could.”
Three of the four singles matches went to three sets. Allison Stark edged Norwich’s Bryn Loomis, 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 taking the final three games. Jessica Lerner, a senior for Norwich, pulled off perhaps the best comeback win in Stewart’s long tenure coaching the program.
Lerner was down four match points in the last-set tiebreaker, 6-2, but strung together six straight points to win in three sets, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 to complete an unbeaten 10-0 season at third singles. “Jessica displayed a classic example of playing one point at a time, and she really gutted it out,” Stewart said.
Reva Seager also won in singles defeating Brianna Callahan in three sets, 6-3, 6-7, 6-2. Emily Stewart and Alyssa Stagliano rolled to a straight sets win at second doubles, 6-2, 6-3.

Brent Rasmussen scored the first of his two goals getting a pass from Dusty Davis to put the Vikings on the board quickly. “We were able to get out on them early and we controlled much of the first half,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “The second half, we didn’t control it as much. The field was very soggy from all the rain, and it created some different types of bounces. We could have played better, but we won the game, and we’ll take it.”
Davis, Jason Olin, and Trevor Marston added important goals for OV (9-2) who host Brookfield on Friday.

“We just weren’t ready at the start, and we never recovered after that opening goal,” said S-E coach Kylie Davis.
Jennifer Wright tallied unassisted for Mount Markham, one of the top teams in the Center State Conference, Davis said.
“They’re a solid team,” Davis said. “We hope to see them again in sectionals.”

GREENE – Greene rebounded from a shutout loss to Unadilla Valley last weekend blowing out Midstate Athletic Conference division contender Walton on Wednesday.
Paige Wilcox, who has over 20 goals this season, scored all three of her goals in the opening half. She tallied first at 20:07, then tacked on two more in the final eight minutes of the half.
“Walton is not only one of the top teams in the league, but in the area,” said Greene coach Brandy Stone. “It was a very good win, and really a full team effort. They had a couple good chances, but our goalie made some good saves, and overall, we really controlled the game.”
Rebecca Smith and Sierra Stoppkotte had goals in the second half. Goalie Shannon Gregory made 13 saves for the shutout.
Greene (7-2, 9-2-1) is at Sidney on Tuesday.

In just 79 seconds, Oxford was able to tie the game. Emily Smith drew Oxford to within a goal at the 13:45 mark, and Smith fed Haley Witchella for the tying goal at 12:26.
Just 19 seconds later, B-G answered those goals when Gia Cuomo scored for the second time. “We played a good second half, but you have to play all 80 minutes,” said Oxford coach Kathleen Cragle. “We had a lot of missed opportunities and some good shots that we didn’t finish.”
Oxford plays at Sidney today.

Locked in a 1-1 tie with the Bulldogs, freshman Corrine Izard scored the winning goal for the Storm with 14:02 left. Izard picked up a loose ball in front of the Delhi goal, and directed it into the net. “Our passing was great and we were working the ball around,” said UV coach Janelle Ross. “We had a lot of opportunities and the game was in our hands. The last goal wasn’t picture-perfect, but (Corrine) was in the right place at the right time, and she capitalized.”
Freshman Taylor Davis scored in the first half for UV (7-1, 9-3), who are off until next Wednesday’s home game with Oxford.

SHERBURNE – Sauquoit Valley scored with 7:20 left in sudden-victory overtime to defeat the Marauders on Wednesday.
The Marauders, playing what head coach Sheila Cooman termed “our best game of the season,” had numerous scoring opportunities, but could not solve Sauquoit keeper Jessica Jecko.
“She’s an exceptional goalie,” Cooman said of Jecko. “We had some really good shots, but she was able to make the saves.
“For the first time this season, we really showed a lot of passion, and we did the job.”
Mallory Mazurowski scored the winning goal on a breakaway beating S-E keeper Katherine Robertson with a perfectly placed shot. “Katherine played it well, and if the shot goes an inch the other way, it’s out of bounds,” Cooman said.

COOPERSTOWN – Sherburne-Earlville’s boys defeated Poland and Mount Markham, and fell just one point shy of a sweep falling to host Cooperstown, 24-25 in Wednesday’s four-way meet.
Noah Huff (18.28), Dan Palmiter (19:03), and Dakota Nelson (19:26) had 3-4-5 finishes out of 40 total runners to lead the Marauders.
Sofeia Eddy was first for S-E and first overall among 24 girls timing 21:56. The Marauders’ girls scored a win over Mount Markham, whose lineup was incomplete.
“This is probably the most difficult course in our league, and it has a lot of challenging hills,” said S-E coach Anne Geary of the Cooperstown layout. “The kids stepped up to the challenge, especially coming off our invitational last weekend.”

“This is probably the most difficult course in our league, and it has a lot of challenging hills,” said S-E coach Anne Geary of the Cooperstown layout. “The kids stepped up to the challenge, especially coming off our invitational last weekend.”
