One car accident in McDonough sends three to hospital
McDONOUGH – Firemen freed a passenger from a car Wednesday afternoon after it struck a utility pole head on, knocking down live electrical wires.
Officials were alerted to the accident at about 1:53 p.m. yesterday after a 911 caller reported a a one-car accident near 1868 State Highway 220 in the Town of McDonough. The caller also said a female passenger was trapped inside.
The McDonough and Oxford Fire Departments responded along with Norwich EMS.
New York State Police Trooper Jason Place said there were three occupants in the vehicle.
The driver, 37-year-old ArLouise V. Pierce of East Pharsalia, and back seat passenger, 18-year-old Justin Watt, were taken by ambulance to Chenango Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.
The front seat passenger, 22-year-old Justine Horner, was unable to exit the vehicle after the car’s door and interior were damaged during the accident. Oxford firemen spent about 10 minutes freeing Horner from the wreckage using the Jaws of Life.
The crew reported that Horner was awake and alert during the extrication. She was taken by ambulance to the McDonough ball flats, where Smithville firemen set up a helicopter landing area.
She was flown to Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center in Johnson City by the Life Net of New York, based in Sidney. Responders reported that her injuries did not appear to be life threatening at the time.
The accident occurred as the vehicle was heading east and failed to negotiate a curve in the road. The car veered from the right shoulder, crashed through some light brush and then struck a NYSEG utility pole. The pole snapped in half and several connected wires fell to the ground.
Crews shut down the section of Rt. 220 for about two hours as they removed debris and NYSEG conducted repairs.
Police have not issued any tickets in the incident, but reported that excess speed appeared to be a factor. Troopers also reported both the driver and front passenger were wearing seat belts.
