Norwich volleyball team edges Owego

Volleyball

Norwich 3, Owego 2
NORWICH – Norwich earned its seventh win of the season outlasting Owego in five games Tuesday, 25-14, 28-26, 24-26, 13-25, 25-8.
It was believed just the second win for Norwich over Owego in the past 25 seasons, although Norwich head coach Shelly Alger was not able to confirm that fact.
Megan Moses and Rhea French each had a team-high eight aces for the Tornado (7-3). Lexi Perez led with six kills, Jessica Hubbard picked up four stuff blocks, and French finished with nine assists.
Alger had her team regroup for the final game after Owego got back into the match taking the third and fourth games. “I told them that this was our game and we needed to have fun while we’re playing,” Alger said. “If we weren’t having fun out there, we weren’t going to take it.”
Norwich plays at Susquehanna Valley on Thursday.

Field Hockey

Greene 3, Walton 1
WALTON – Greene found itself in the unique position of looking up at the scoreboard as Walton scored just 45 seconds into the game.
The Trojans remained composed with Jahna Driscoll scoring the tying goal at 4:45 of the first half, and Colleen Dietrich putting the Trojans in front for good 5 1/2 minutes into the second half.
“We played hard, and there was never a sense of urgency or panic,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin. “This was great for us. We just started flat and they took advantage. Good for them.”
Driscoll tacked on an insurance goal five minutes after Dietrich, her 26th goal of the season. The tally by Walton was the first Greene has given up this season in 11 games. Carlin wasn’t concerned about giving up the goal, and said there was no way she or her team thought they could go through the entire season holding the opposition scoreless.
“We look to win first,” Carlin said. “It doesn’t matter what the final score is. If the other team scores 10, we need to score 11.”
