Cyclones sweep three games

NORWICH – The Norwich Cyclones’ A and C teams remained unbeaten, and the B team earned a shutout victory in a sweep of three games Sunday at Alumni Field.
The “A” team downed Oneida 22-0, and with a win or tie against Holland Patent this Sunday, will claim sole possession of the Tri-Valley League division championship.
This past Sunday’s action against the Indians was led by Tristan Rifanburg, who scored three touchdowns of 44, 6 and 10 yards, and rushed for 114 yards in the first half, for a 22-0 halftime lead. John Marvin rushed for a point-after touchdown, and also kicked a two-point conversion. A 30-yard pass from Rifanburg to Marvin set up the final Cyclones score.
Spencer Stone again led the defense, along with Marvin, Matt Craig, Alec Weaver, Rifanburg, and Nick Murphy. Cameron Edwards had a sack and fumble recovery, as did Carlos Ithier, and Everett Thompson came up with an interception. Dan Zieno, Killian Benedict, and Dan Macintosh also helped stop Oneida.
The Cyclones’ “B” team stopped New Hartford 6-0 with a five-minute, fourth-quarter drive culminating with a one-yard TD by Jacob Franklin with only 2:39 left in the game.
Zackory Clipston led the defense, with Paden Burlison, Carter Hubbard, and Zach Race recording fumble recoveries. Hubbard and Jake Walsh applied constant pressure on the New Hartford quarterback. Zachary Foulds and Hubbard had interceptions, and Cole Rifanburg and Nate Scheer played big “D” as well. Dalen “Gunny” Geislinger blocked a Spartans’ punt.
The Cyclones’ “C” team blanked Oneida 21-0 Sunday, and will face undefeated Whitesboro for the league championship next Sunday, Oct.17.
This week, Drew Walsh opened the Cyclones’ scoring on a one-yard TD following the an opening 60-yard drive. Carter Rudnitski added the point-after run. Marcus Benjamin had touchdowns of 8 and 35 yards and rushed for 121 yards. Cameron Ivan kicked a two-point conversion – the first kicked PAT on C Team since Nate Ashton did it six years ago.
On defense, Ryan Borden, Rudnitski, Tim Thompson, Robert Stone, Ian Stone, Ivan, Walsh, Owen Blackman, Alex Wehrli, and Ty Rifanburg played great defense, with Rifanburg making a fine open-field tackle to prevent an Indians score.
The Cyclone “D” was in a close, hard-hitting, non-scoring scrimmage with Oneida.
The Cyclones’ “B” team cheerleaders will compete Saturday in the State cheerleading competition in Albany.
The Cyclones announced and awarded medals to the 2010 Pop Warner All-American Scholar Athletes and Cheerleader nominees, who must maintain a 96 or above academic average to be considered for National Honors. The nominees are Madison Kerr, B Team cheerleader; Nathan Scheer, B team football; and A team football players Cameron Edwards, Matthew Parrella, and Alec Weaver.
The Cyclones are at home Sunday for the final regular season games: The D team plays Whitesboro at 9 a.m., the C team faces Whitesboro at 11 a.m., the B team plays Whitesboro at 1 p.m., and the A team wraps up play hosts Holland Patent at 3 p.m.
