Commerce Chenango hosts inaugural Space Walk
NORWICH – Commerce Chenango – in collaboration with the City of Norwich, the downtown Business Improvement District and the Norwich Merchants’ Association – will hold its first-ever Space Walk from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
An opportunity for entrepreneurs, business owners, investors, real estate agents, developers and community members to tour a total of 15 vacant and available commercial properties located throughout the city, the Space Walk will kick off from the former Rite Aid building, at the intersection of North Broad and Mitchell Streets.
In addition, participants will have a chance to make new connections, brainstorm ideas for the future of the structures and information will be available on possible incentives and financial assistance.
The goals for Space Walk are multi-faceted, according to Commerce Chenango Economic Development and Business Information Specialist Jennifer Tavares.
“Some of these properties have been on the market a long time and there’s a lot of potential there,” stated Tavares. “Everything from relatively small office spaces to very large buildings, upwards of 60,000 square feet. There’s a little something for everyone to look at.”
Tavares said she expected approximately one to two dozen participants for the Space Walk, which will tour locations such as the former “Unguentine Building,” at 20 American Avenue; the former Morrisville State College Norwich Campus at 16 South Broad Street; the former Salvation Army store at 19 South Broad Street and 10 South Broad Street, which once housed the Ives Cream Parlor and Gourmet Coffee Shop.
“Our hope is that by inviting the right mix of businesses, people, entrepreneurs, developers and investors, and showing them numerous properties in just a few short hours, we will open the downtown area up to new investment and fresh perspectives on the possibilities these properties hold,” added Tavares.
Commerce Chenango officials have plans to make the Space Walk an annual or semi-annual event, if successful, and Tavares said she thought they’d garnered enough attention to warrant future Space Walks.
“I think we’ve received enough positive response at this point that we’ll probably try it again,” stated Tavares. “We’ve gotten only positive feedback and people seem pretty interested by the Space Walk. Hopefully it’s something that will continue to grow.”
