Greene 4, Delhi 1
DELHI – Greene needed two wins in division playoff games just to reach the MAC championship game, and capped its league season winning a second straight league title Wednesday afternoon at Delhi.
“It’s very satisfying for us at this point,” said Greene coach Rick Tallman. “The odds were stacked against us, and we put ourselves in this position. We lost the draws from the bye and everything was working against us. That gave us a little more ‘umphh’ to prove ourselves, and it fueled us the last three games.”
Greene beat Delhi 4-1 in its second game of the season, and not much changed in the second meeting. Alex Driscoll beat multiple Delhi defenders scoring just 1:16 into the game. Driscoll then set up the first of two Mikki Brown goals 13 1/2 minutes later as the Trojans led by two goals at halftime.
Driscoll and Brown tacked on goals in the second half, and the Trojans’ defense contained Delhi’s potent attack most of the game. “We felt they had three really quality players, and we targeted Carson King as the most dangerous,” Tallman said. “We put Evan Moxley on him, and Evan did an incredible job. King’s scoring opportunity came on a direct kick, and had nothing to do with Evan marking him.”
The win improved Greene’s record to 15-4, who now shift their focus back toward the Section IV playoffs. The Trojans won their sectional opener Tuesday against Sidney, and play Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Spencer-Van Etten.
