Greene Drift Riders host Snow Kick-Off this weekend

GREENE – The Greene Drift Riders Snowmobile Club will host its first Snow-Kick Off Saturday night at the Silo Restaurant in Coventry. According to the club’s president, Brian Davis, the event is a first for the group, and will serve as both a social gathering for current and prospective members and a fundraiser.
“All proceeds will go to our trail and grooming fund,” he explained.
The event will begin with a social hour from 5 to 6 p.m., followed by a buffet dinner. Rounding out the evening with be a live musical performance by The LJ Gates Band.
“LJ Gates is going to be rocking the house,” said Davis.
There will also be raffle baskets, 50/50’s and plenty of door prizes, the Drift Riders president explained. Club apparel and maps will also be available for sale, and guests will have the opportunity to renew their membership.
“Hopefully we’ll gain a few (new) memberships, too,” he added.
According to Davis, the club was established in 1971. They groom and maintain some 28 miles of snowmobile trails stretching through the towns of Greene, Coventry, Smithville and McDonough from the vicinity of The Outpost to The Silo. He estimated that 98 percent of the trails maintained by the club are on private land.
With roughly 175 members, Davis said the Drift Riders are actually one of the smallest clubs in the region. They are always on the looking to increase their numbers.
“Club participation is always our biggest goal,” he said.
A family membership is $25, reported Davis, $5 of which goes to the New York State Snowmobile Association. One of the biggest advantages of membership in the Drift Riders or any other snowmobile club is that members receive a “substantial discount” on their snowmobile registrations. According to Davis, snowmobilers who are affiliated with a club pay $45 to register their sleds, as opposed to the regular $100 fee.
Those state registration fees trickle back to clubs in the form of grants to reimburse them for the cost of trail maintenance.
“It’s always challenging,” he said, since the money they receive is based on snowmobile registrations from the prior year. So, a year with poor snowfall means a smaller grant the following year. Unfortunately, he explained, the trail work stays fairly constant, averaging the club $6,000 to $7,000 per year. Hence the need for other fundraisers.
Annually, the group hosts a chicken barbecue each Spring, as well as trail-side hot dog roasts to both raise money and provide opportunities for club members to socialize. They also try to organize occasional group outings. Saturday’s Snow Kick Off will be a first for the club, but Davis hopes it will grow into an annual event.
Already the club has sold roughly 200 tickets for the event, but additional tickets are still available, Davis said.
Tickets are $20 per person in advance, or $25 at the door. Children 12 and under are $10. Advance tickets must be purchased by Wednesday at the latest. For more information, or to purchase tickets, call 656-8040 or 656-4949.
