Otselic Valley presents “12 Angry Jurors” this weekend
SOUTH OTSELIC – The Otselic Valley Junior/Senior High School presents “12 Angry Jurors” this weekend, an adaptation of the Reginald Rose classic “12 Angry Men.”
In the production, a dozen jurors – each with their own personal attitudes, viewpoints and opinions – must decide the fate of a young man accused of stabbing his own father. At the start, all but one member of the jury are convinced of the man’s guilt, resulting in a tumultuous debate which threatens to hang the jury, resulting in a mistrial.
“It’s been challenging as it’s a drama, so it’s been difficult to direct,” said student director Douglas Day, a senior who also serves as Student Council president. “It really showcases our lead performers’ acting skills and their level of maturity.”
Faculty advisor Michael Foor-Pessin agreed it’s a “really difficult play,” and said that, in his 30 years of student productions, this has been one of the most challenging by far.
“The kids are on the stage the whole time and it’s an intense script,” stated Foor-Pessin. “Dramas are always more difficult than something like comedy and, besides our leads, it’s a younger cast all the way around.”
Featuring seniors Nathan Stark, Dusty Davis and Bethany Lewis; junior Alan Lewis and sophomore Kaity Davis – who gives an especially impassioned performance – as the court foreman and jurors three, four, seven and eight respectively, the production is planned, constructed, directed and performed solely by a group of 25 to 30 students, many of whom are currently in the seventh and eighth grades.
“My student directors are the directors,” stressed Foor-Pessin. “I just let them go and it’s a great experience.”
Due to the small size of the OV Junior/Senior High School, Foor-Pessin said it can be difficult getting everybody together, what with the many other obligations the students have. With only one month of preparation, however, he added his group are well-prepared to put on a serious production.
“Giving the kids so much power in the decision-making process really empowers them to invest in their own education and how they enjoy the community and the world,” stated Foor-Pessin. “It’s a matter of confidence and these kids can compete with anybody. They’re absolutely entertaining.”
The Otselic Valley Student Production of Reginald Rose’s “12 Angry Jurors” will be at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the OV Junior/Senior High School Auditorium. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens and $3 for students. All proceeds will benefit the Junior/Senior High School Drama Club.
