SPCA holds pizza party, trophy presentation for top Dog Walk fundraisers
NORWICH – The Chenango County SPCA on Thursday held a celebratory pizza party and trophy presentation for the top team – and individual – who participated in the local shelter’s first-ever Dog Walk – Did Anybody Say Walk? fundraiser.
The event, held in October in Weiler Park, brought together animal lovers from all over the county and state, including a number of SPCA canine “alumni,” who wore red ribbons bearing the message “Proudly adopted from the Chenango SPCA,” according to SPCA Director of Developments Sue Reymers.
The Dog Walk raised over $10,000 for homeless animals in Chenango County, she added.
Chenango Massage Therapy owner Jim Dennis took home the top individual trophy and said he was stunned by people’s generosity.
“I received donations from $1 all the way up to $100 dollars,” stated Dennis, who walked in memory of Odin, his family’s black lab who recently passed away. “It was exciting to take part and we’re happy to do anything to help the SPCA. I try to help out whenever I can.”
The Marley Pohli Pack, led by five-year-old Marley Pohli, were awarded the top team prize for its efforts in the Dog Walk, and the Oxford Primary School kindergartner said she helped out because she “likes animals so much.”
The proud owner of one dog, four cats and two bunnies, Pohli was excited to receive her trophy and called the experience “a lot of fun.”
Reymers and Pohli’s mother Nikki called the young lady an inspiration, and reported that, when asked what she wanted for her birthday, Pohli responded she “only wanted presents for the SPCA.”
“She’s a beautiful, sweet, loving, thoughtful, wonderful little girl and we’re extremely proud of her,” said mother Nikki. “She wants to be an animal rescuer when she grows up so she watches a lot of Animal Planet.”
Major sponsors for the first-ever Dog Walk included the Petco Foundation, NBT Bank, Manpower, Oxford Grooming, AgroFarma, Frontier, Houndstooth Bakery and Boutique, Price Chopper’s Golub Foundation, Unison, Chenango County Printing and the Pennysaver.
Broad Street Chiropractic donated the pair of trophies and Nina’s Pizzeria and the Café Connection provided pizza, salads and other refreshments.
“We had a great first year and we really appreciate everyone’s efforts to help out, they went above and beyond,” said Reymer.
