Greene beaten in state semifinals
CICERO – With the dearth of shots and overall scoring opportunities, it was no surprise that neither Greene nor Mamaroneck scored during the 60 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of sudden-victory overtime.
Left to a penalty stroke shootout to determine the winner, the Tigers outscored the Trojans 3-1 in the shootout Friday night to avenge last year’s Class A state finals loss, and move on to the field hockey finals against Williamsville North.
Mamaroneck never really came close to scoring a goal in the game. Of the two shots on goal that it had, one came in the game’s opening three minutes, and the other – in the second half – was easily turned aside by Greene senior goalie Devyn Staley.
Greene (18-1), who was looking to repeat as state champions, finished with only five shots and seven penalty corners. It was also the first time in 2 1/2 years that the Trojans failed to put a goal on the board.
“We just couldn’t get anything going on the offensive end, and they did a nice job of shutting Jahna (Driscoll) down,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin.
Greene’s second leading scorer, Andrea Day, saw limited action in the second half. Nursing a knee injury from last week’s state playoff win over Shenendehowa, Day did not have her usual explosiveness as she gave way to reserve Emily Gascon.
“Not having Andrea hurt us from a speed aspect,” Carlin said. “She played with a lot of heart (when she was in there), and really, our whole team did.”
Greene had two excellent scoring opportunities in the game, one a reverse-sticked shot by Driscoll in the first half that was saved by Tigers goalie Tina Kumar. The ball hung in front of the goal for a moment before it was swept away by the Mamaroneck defense.
In the second overtime period, Greene earned a penalty corner in the final three minutes of play. Emily Conroe inserted the pass to Driscoll, who swept the ball left to Abbey Wentlent. Wentlent blasted a hard shot just wide of the goal.
“That was just a great shot by Abbey, unfortunately it didn’t go in,” Carlin said.
Under penalty stroke rules, each team selected five players, and each team alternated shot attempts. Mamaroneck scored on its first three stroke attempts, while Greene’s only tally came from sophomore Caitlin Gorton.
Down 3-1, Greene keeper Devyn Staley made the stop on the fourth round of strokes forcing Greene to make the next attempt to keep the hope of a tie alive. The ensuing shot went wide of the goal to clinch the victory for Mamaroneck. The Tigers’ players delayed their victory celebration for a moment until they realized they had clinched victory over the defending state champions.
“It was a tremendous honor to be here, but our goal wasn’t to have our season end tonight,” Carlin said. “Nobody wants their hearts broken, but we definitely do not have anything to hang our heads about. I’m sure we’ll be back with a vengeance next year.”
