Cyclones lose in state semifinals

ROCHESTER – The Norwich Cyclones took on the best that Rochester could offer, and came up short, 19-13, in the Empire State Classic semifinals here Saturday.

Rochester Southwest scored the winning touchdown with 51 seconds remaining in the game.

The Cyclones scored first on the game’s opening possession with a 16-play, 63-yard ball-control drive. Tristan Rifanburg scored from one yard out with 1:12 remaining in the opening quarter.

Southwest scored on a pair of long-distance TDs in the second to take a 12-6 lead. The Cyclones struck paydirt 25 seconds before the half on a 14-yard pass from Rifanburg to Matt Craig that was set up by a 40-yard pass from Rifanburg to Everett Thompson. Rifanburg added the point-after run for a 13-12 Cyclones halftime lead.
