New children’s clothing store offers affordable choices for parents

NORWICH – Children have always played an important role in the life of Lilly Bean owner Sara Behrmann who – partnered with daughter Jennifer – officially opened for business Nov. 1.
Prior to opening the second-hand children’s clothing store, Behrmann said she and her husband had provided foster care for several years, run a day care center and are now excited to have the opportunity to provide low-income and young parents a place to purchase decently priced, affordable clothing for their children.
The biggest challenge, according to Behrmann, was coming up with a name for the recent addition to the downtown business district.
“We were struggling with the name for a while and, between the two of us, it took a few months,” admitted Behrmann. “We wanted something great, something catchy, and Lilly Bean just seemed to fit. We both fell in love with it immediately.”
The name, ironically enough, was inspired by Behrmann’s 3-year-old niece Lillian, who the owner called “our little mascot.”
Behrmann said she and her daughter had worked extremely hard on the store’s presentation and hoped to avoid throwing something together quickly. A significant amount of time was spent working on “what we thought would be perfect,” she added.
In addition – and unexpectedly, according to Behrmann – the store has become a meeting place for inexperienced parents seeking knowledge.
“We’ve had a lot of young parents coming in and asking questions,” said Behrmann. “This is more than just a retail opportunity for them, this is also a community resource and an educational opportunity for parents.”
Behrmann said she and daughter Jennifer have gotten more and more familiar with their new business and the growing number of customers who have begun to frequent the shop, and added that running the business has been wonderful experience to date.
“We’ve seen a lot of community support and the incredible support from Commerce Chenango and other local businesses has been great,” stated Behrmann. “We couldn’t ask for better customers and we’re very happy with how things have gone so far.”
The Lilly Bean second-hand children’s clothing store, 12 South Broad St., is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. For more information call 438-3194.
