Thanksgiving Day fire hits Greene business district

GREENE – While most area residents were sitting down to enjoy their traditional Thanksgiving feasts, volunteers from seven local fire companies were battling a blaze in Greene’s downtown business district.
Emergency responders were alerted of the structure fire by a 911 call placed shortly before 2 p.m., reported Greene Fire Chief Dan Montgomery. When they arrived, they found the back of Foo Chow Restaurant (46 Genesee St.) and Thomas Real Estate (50 Genesee St.) in flames.
While the investigation is ongoing, First Assistant Chief Mark Colwell said the fire is believed to have originated in a portion of the slope-roofed addition which runs along the back of the commercial block owned by Foo Chow.
The building which houses the restaurant, however, sustained only minimal damage, Montgomery said. The rear portion of the Thomas building sustained much more severe damage. The front of the historic structure, where the real estate office is located, had limited smoke and water damage. Windows at the front were broken by responders to gain access.
The chief reported that no one was in either building at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported. Genesee Street was closed for approximately two hours, while crews battled the blaze.
In addition to Greene’s volunteers, Brisben, Oxford, Coventry, Chenango Forks, Smithville’s Genegantslet Fire Company and Harpursville’s Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) responded, as did the Village of Greene’s municipal electric department.
As the last of the crews prepared to depart shortly after 4 p.m., Thomas Real Estate owners Debbie and Dick Thomas, along with friends and family, were using the last bit of rapidly fading daylight to begin picking up the pieces. While Dick and the others worked to cover holes in the roof, Debbie and friend Mary Jane Alger swept up glass in the real estate office three floors below.
According to Debbie, the family had just sat down to their Thanksgiving meal when they received a call from a friend about the fire. She acknowledged it could have been much worse – both for her and her husband, and the village as a whole – if emergency crews had not been as quick to respond, and the fire had spread further to other downtown buildings.
“How do you thank anyone enough?” she said tearfully, gazing out the shattered door at the remaining firefighters clustered in the street beyond.
