Public rallies support against Rogers Center closing
NORWICH – A Facebook fan page called “Save Rogers Conservation Center” has grown to about 4,500 members since it was created Nov. 18.
The page features hundreds of remarks from citizens expressing anger over the center’s scheduled closing and sharing their own experiences.
“Everyday citizens have taken it upon themselves to create an informative hub to disperse e-mail addresses, addresses, phone numbers and get the information out to the world of the closing of the Rogers Center in less than 48 hours via Facebook,” said one of the site’s administrators, Paula Howard.
Howard said she and Bob Simmons are the administrators in charge of monitoring the site and often find themselves responding to inquiries from media outlets and the community.
“This has traveled beyond New York into the 50 states and 18 different countries. These are the people saving the Rogers Center with their writing, typing and calling campaign.” she said via e-mail Friday morning.

A number of area residents walking the streets of Sherburne shared their thoughts on the center’s impending closure last week.
Debra Collins of North Norwich, an area resident for last 16 years, said, “We’ve had birthdays and we’ve walked the trails and the kids love feeding the fish. I didn’t think they’d close it. A lot of people I know around here go there. Many just like walking the trails and getting exercise.”
“I’m shocked. I think it’s an outrageous thing to do. To shut down something that has offered so much enrichment to the local community and touched so many local lives,” said Karen Doonan of Smyrna. “I don’t understand how they can cut something that’s given us so much value, not just to our community but to the whole state.”
Kimber Hancock of Smyrna said, “From who I’ve been talking to it’s upset a lot of people. They do a great job up there and when I first heard the news, I honestly didn’t believe it.”
“The family goes up there every summer, a lot of the times we take our city relatives with us and their little ones,” said Misty Weidman of New Berlin.
Joe Magro of Sherburne, area resident for 27 years and owner of Joe and Vinny’s Pizzeria, said, “We’ve been going to Rogers at least two or three times a year. The pizzeria gets a lot of calls to bring up food for a party, a group of school kids, things like that. It’s a shame but it seems like something that might be out of our hands. The people up top are just looking down at us and don’t understand how these things really affect us. What can we do? I hate to see it close.”
