7th annual Recycled Holiday Ornament Contest winners announced
OXFORD – The Oxford Holiday Committee’s 7th annual Recycled Holiday Ornament contest winners were announced by the honorable Oxford Village Mayor, Terry Stark at the Tree Lighting Ceremony on Nov. 28. All 29 ornament entries from Oxford Academy Primary School students are considered winners, and will receive Certificates of Recognition as a show of gratitude; however, place awards in each grade were selected.
Gift certificates from Oxford merchants have been sponsored by the Oxford Holiday Committee. They are from Big Blue/Valero for $15 gift cards (that could be used for a pizza), the Clachan Coffee House for hot chocolates topped with whipped cream, and Hoppie’s ice cream parlor for ice cream sundaes. In addition, the DEC will be donating keepsake mugs of recycled material which will be given to the second place winners and NY Recycles calendars for third place.
The students who showed outstanding creativity and an exceptional understanding of the concept of recycling are:
In Kindergarten, 1st: Hailey Fleury, in Mrs. Fagnani’s class, for her pop-lids wreath.
In First Grade: 1st: Nolan Dodzweit, in Mrs. Todaro’s class, for his snowman made of 3 plastic dessert cups. 2nd: Ethan Fleury, in Mrs. Korver’s class, for his plastic bottle snowman with CD. 3rd Place: Trisha Bohannon, in Mrs. Halsteter’s class, for glittered plastic container bell.
In Second Grade: 1st: Aubry Simpson, in Mr. Beck’s class, for her gumball container ornaments.
In Third Grade: 1st: Jonah Loughren, in Mrs. Lawrence’s class, for his S. Claus Snow Removal plow. 2nd: Makayla Whaley, in Mrs. Miracle’s class, for her wood snowman.
In Fourth Grade: 1st: Andrea Dempsey, in Mrs. Pizza’s class, for her twist-n-ties and bottle rings “Carolers Tree.” 2nd: Morrigan Begeal, in Mr. Kappauf’s class, for her oatmeal can Reindeer. A tie in 3rd Place: Karley Marshman, in Mr. Kappauf’s class, for her plastic bottle Santa; And Gillian Mulder, also in Mr. Kappauf’s class, for her bottle in paper “Santa on Sleigh.”
Students will receive their personalized ‘Certificates of Recognition’, gift certificates and DEC gifts in school. The document states that, “…while you were having fun creating something from waste materials, you were also learning that if you’re clever, sometimes trash can be reused. This is what environmental conservation is all about.”
The DEC also generously donated pencils (made from recycled currency) and an informative “NY Recycles” conservation booklet, for all entering students.
