Norwich holds off Owego
Girls’ Basketball
Norwich 49, Owego 42
OWEGO – Norwich came up with some big buckets late in the game to secure its fourth win of the season in five outings.
Senior Hannah Runyon drove and dished off to Sophie Stewart for two layups in the last two minutes as Norwich was able to maintain the advantage. “It was really a gutsy game, and even though we won by seven, it was never comfortable for us,” said Norwich coach Josh Bennett.
Owego sharpshooter, Brittany Rando, scored 13 of her 15 points after halftime as the Indians stayed in striking range. Forward Rachel Merrill added 11 points, and those two were isolated late in the game on the offensive end in an attempt to overtake the Tornado.
“Bryn (Loomis)did just a great job defending Rando, and Sophie did a tremendous job of rebounding for us,” Bennett said. “To hold a team like Owego to 42 points is impressive.”
Runyon led Norwich’s scoring with 17 points, Loomis added 12, and Molly DeMellier scored nine.
Norwich hosts Susquehanna Valley on Friday.

Bainbridge-Guilford 56, Unatego 54
OTEGO – Bainbridge-Guilford appeared well on its way to loss Tuesday night at Unatego. The Bobcats made up a 16-point deficit in the last five minutes of the game, and hit 5-of-6 from the foul line in overtime to secure their third win this season.
“I don’t ever remember being in a game like this,” said B-G coach Bob Conway. “We were horrible for 3 1/2 quarters, yet somehow we came back, and won in overtime.”
Shania Vandermark scored a career-high 27 points and had 13 of those points in the last stanza. Reserve Amber DeGroat, though, sparked the initial rally.
DeGroat was inserted with her team trailing 40-24. She immediately hit a short jumper, two points that loomed large. “For some reason, that basket just got us going,” Conway said of DeGroat’s lone bucket of the game.
After closing the gap to two points, Conway called a timeout for one last shot to tie the game. The play was designed for Vandermark, yet reserve Chelsea Tewksbury found the ball in her hands on the baseline. Tewksbury knocked down the shot – her only points of the game – with 3.7 seconds left to force extra minutes.
“It was just a crazy game,” Conway said. “They had us down and just about closing the door and locking it.”
Vandermark added 18 rebounds to her night. Randi Conway finished with 15 to aid the effort.
Unatego’s quickness led it to the double-digit lead, Conway said. Sarah Mannina scored 15 points to pace the Spartans and Shelby Puffer tacked on 12. The Spartans finished 20-for-42 from the foul line (47.6 percent), and the result of those fouls – and foul shots – was two B-G starters fouling out. “Their quickness gave us a lot of trouble,” Conway said. “We were coming off a great defensive game against Sherburne-Earlville. Tonight, I was disappointed with our effort. We started a little lethargic, and didn’t get it going until late.”
