Rt. 12 closed after two trapped in head-on collision
OXFORD – A driver attempting to avoid a chunk of falling ice from the back of a tractor trailer swerved into the oncoming lane along State Highway 12 Wednesday and struck a pick-up truck head-on, trapping two people inside the wreckage.
The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office reported Katie Norton, 22, of Greene was traveling south around noon yesterday along Rt. 12 near the intersection of Turner Street in the Town of Oxford.
Police reported a piece of ice dislodged from a tractor trailer traveling just ahead of Norton’s car, causing her to swerve to avoid the falling debris.
Police said Norton’s vehicle then crossed the yellow line and struck a north bound pick-up truck head on.
Chenango County Fire Coordinator Matthew L. Beckwith said the pick-up’s driver, 67-year-old James Kenyon, pulled himself from the wreckage to discover that his wife, Shirley, was still pinned inside the pick-up and Norton was trapped inside her car.
“When responders were first notified of the incident, they were told it involved serious injuries and multiple entrapments,” said Beckwith.
The Oxford Fire Department responded to the scene, extracting Norton from her vehicle after removing her car’s roof, windows and dashboard with the “Jaw of Life,” said Beckwith. After 30 minutes, firemen extracted Norton and then about ten minutes later, they freed Shirley Kenyon from the pick-up.
Responders requested an emergency medical helicopter, but all flights in the area were grounded due to poor weather conditions, reported Beckwith.
Beckwith said none of the victims appeared to have life-threatening injuries and were communicating with rescuers. They were transported by Cooperstown Medical Transport Ambulance to Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City.
Emergency crews were forced to close down Rt. 12 for about two and half hours as a result of the crash.
The Norwich and Oxford Fire Police diverted traffic to County Rt. 32. A less serious accident also occurred along that roadway at about the same time, causing further complications and delays for motorists, said Beckwith.
Deputies ticketed Norton for failing to keep right.
