Norwich PD arrests Virginia fugitive hiding at a city apartment
NORWICH – The Norwich Police Department arrested a wanted Virginia man Thursday.
Officers arrests 24-year-old fugitive Timothy W. Potter Jr. at 11 p.m., inside an apartment house on West Main Street yesterday. Potter allegedly fled his state to avoid a possible nine-year prison sentence for his involvement in a felony break-in.
Police said they are in the process of organizing Potter’s return to the Commonwealth of Virginia, where he is wanted for felony level crimes by the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office.
“We received information from the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office sometime ago there may be a fugitive from Virginia staying in Norwich,” said Chief Joseph Angelino. “We were also aware of an abandoned car with Virginia license plates in a parking lot in the area of West Main Street. Once the Virginia authorities entered the appropriate wanted person teletype entry, we were able to take action.”
Potter is charged as a fugitive from justice and currently is being held in the Norwich City Jail awaiting extradition proceedings in Chenango County Court, scheduled for today.
Information obtained from the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office reported Potter was arrested and convicted of receiving stolen property from a burglary, a felony and larceny, felonies, including the theft of a firearm. Police said he was originally convicted and sentenced to 9 years and 6 months in state prison, but the sentence was suspended pending good behavior while Potter was on probation.
The office reported Potter failed to appear back in court on Dec. 3 and then absconded from Virginia to New York State.
