Local sculptor’s work featured at Oakdale Mall
NORWICH – Local residents who traveled south to Johnson City and the Oakdale Mall this holiday season may have noticed a unique and realistic display of life-sized Santa Claus statues occupying the space in front of the Bon-Ton department store.
Created by Norwich resident and professional sculptor Linda Kays-Biviano, with the help of artist Margaret Kriener, the life-like creations, six in all, represent various international incarnations of Christmas’ most beloved symbol.
Included in the display – which will run through January 1 – are Traditional Santa, Saint Nicholas, Civil War Santa, Russian Santa, Victorian Santa and Kris Kringle.
“I was always into crafts and I wanted to create my own work,” said Kays-Biviano, who began experimenting with the art form when she moved to Norwich in 1990. “That’s what got me into sculpting.”
Kays-Biviano was offered the commission after Oakdale Mall Marketing Director Nancy Phillips noticed her work, which was featured at the Black Bear Winery in the Town of Greene at the time.
In early 2010, with the help of Kriener, Kays-Biviano began creating the six-foot-tall Santas, which are made from PVC pipe wrapped in foam, fabric and – once the head and body shape are completed – silicon. When finished, the various Santas’ hands and faces look and feel just like real skin. For the beards, Kays-Biviano utilized Cotswold sheep fleece, which was sculpted directly into the silicone, resulting in the extremely realistic finished product.
While she’s primarily self-taught, Kays-Biviano said that, following a course on sculpting in California, she was able to jump into the Limited Edition market, creating smaller, celebrity-themed sculptures, miniature personages and what she calls “character dolls.” It wasn’t long until other artists were requesting Kays-Biviano cast for them, and now her sculptures can be found all over the world, she added.
“I’ve gotten so many nice compliments,” said Kays-Biviano of the Oakdale Mall display.
