Greene Holiday Showcase Finals
Norwich 79, Greene 50
NORWICH – In the opening half, particularly the second quarter, Norwich coach Mark Abbott said his team could not have played much better.
Trailing Greene early on in the finals of the Trojans’ own tournament, the unbeaten Tornado scored the last nine points of the first quarter to create a 15-8 lead, then ripped through Greene in the second quarter putting 34 more points on the board to produce a sizable halftime advantage, 49-21.
“The 34 points we scored in the quarter is the second highest since I’ve been here,” said Norwich coach Mark Abbott. “We’re awful good in the open floor, and when we can press and run like we did tonight, we’re a tough matchup for people. We had it all going in the second quarter.”
Greene (4-4) did a fair job of breaking Norwich’s full-court press in the early stages of the game, but found itself completely rattled the entire second quarter committing 18 total turnovers in the first half. “We knew about their press and worked on it in practice,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “It got to us and that was the difference. We panicked with the ball.”
Jon Foulds, coming off a career-high 35 points Wednesday night, had 28 more yesterday evening and was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Seth Thomsen added 16 points to the victory and Dennis Oralls canned 10. Foulds had 19 points by halftime, Oralls scored all of his points in the first half, and Thomsen had eight in the first two quarters. More than that, Abbott was especially pleased with the way his club distributed the ball. “The number of unselfish great passes...as a coach, that makes you feel great,” the NHS mentor said. “Every guy was looking to make that extra pass. We had countless layups. If I was a Greene fan, it had to be frustrating, especially coming off a nice win over Chenango Valley the previous night. For our players, they’re on a mission this season to create their own identity.”
Ten of Norwich’s baskets in the second quarter were layups, many coming off Greene turnovers, but a few came in transition after a defensive rebound. Foulds and Kyle Edwards also hit three-pointers in the quarter to prove that Norwich was still a capable outside shooting team.
“The last two nights Jon and Seth have had, obviously our style of play suits them,” Abbott said.
Isaiah Webb scored 13 points to lead Greene, and Jeff Carlin added nine – all on three-pointers. “This tournament was a great learning experience for us,” Smith said. “We want to build our program, and playing teams like Chenango Valley and Norwich will only help us.”
Norwich (8-0) plays at Oneonta Monday night.

DERUYTER – G-MU ended its first month of the season with an unblemished 5-0 mark edging DeRuyter Wednesday night in the finals of the Rockets’ own tournament.
Ian Edwards had 12 points, and the tournament’s most valuable player, Eddie Ray Cotton, added 11 for the defensive-minded Raiders. “We’re happy to come home with more than a split in this tournament, and that’s a great thing,” said G-MU coach Bill Hartman.
The Raiders focused on slowing DeRuyter’s Kyle Tiffany, who had 31 points the previous night against Otselic Valley. Tiffany only scored two with G-MU’s Jon Scofield handling the defensive duties on Tiffany.
In the Raiders’ five wins, only one opponent has scored more than 32 points, and the Raiders are giving up just 32 points a game this season. “We’re pleased with the defense we’re playing,” Hartman said. “We’ll find out how solid our defense is next week.”

GREENE – Chenango Forks turned an eight-point deficit early in the third quarter into a comfortable victory winning the Greene Holiday Showcase championship game Thursday night over the Trojans.
Michelle Transue had 14 points in the third quarter, and the Blue Devils used a 21-2 run in the second half to take command of the game. “They shot the ball very well, and we had a couple of defensive breakdowns where we left Transue and Williams (Ashley) alone,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton. “Banking one in from the top of the key got Transue going.”
Greene led by five at halftime, and extended the lead to 26-18 getting a three-pointer from Caitlin Gorton and another three from Andrea Day. Transue started the big spurt for her team with the aforementioned bank shot from 19 feet. Forks added three more trifectas over the next three minutes – one from Williams and two from Transue. The last one from Transue snapped a 26-26 tie to give Chenango Forks the lead for good.

Windsor Christmas Tournament
WINDSOR – Only four Chenango County wrestlers – all from Greene – earned a spot at the top of the podium in the highly competitive 54th Annual Windsor Christmas Tournament.
The Trojans’ Mike Beckwith, a defending Section IV champion, won at 145 pounds, Keegan Cerwinski was first at 160 pounds, Kurt Shear (189) avenged a loss in the sectional finals last year to Lansing’s Ryan Todd taking a 6-5 decision, and Kyle Stanton edged Norwich’s Kegan Levesque at 215 pounds, 3-2 in overtime.
Levesque had the best finish for the Tornado, who also received third-place finishes from Tristan Rifanburg (112) and Frankie Garcia (119). “Kegan had a great tournament,” said Norwich coach Joe Downey. “He was pleased and I was pleased. Now we know where we have to go.”
Rifanburg lost 4-2 in the semifinals to Huntington’s Corey Jamison. Jamison had the lone victory over Rifanburg last year as the Norwich seventh-grader went on to win a state title. “Tristan wrestled tough, but we didn’t wrestle our match,” Downey said. “Other than the Clyde Cole, this was the first match where Tristan was tested. He knows he has work to do on his feet to set up his shots.”
Garcia ran into defending Division I state champion Nigel McNeil of Huntington in the semifinals. McNeil won an 11-0 decision, but had to work for every point, Downey said. “It was a good experience for Frankie,” Downey said.
B-G/Afton did not have any finalists, but did place six in the top four. Leading the way was Vinnie Buttice, who was third at 171 pounds.
